A HOUSE FOR GUSTAV KLIMT

BRIEF

Biology and Culture… Eros and Spirit… Gold and the rest of colors…

Figure and ground… the figure, often, golden, or with golden accents.

Geometry and organicity…

The union of opposites.

The kiss…

Should we say more…?

The Kiss… his most formidable painting, although there are other very important ones…

His Beethoven fresco is magnificent…!!!!!!!!!!!!

A great painter… a painter who can still inspire us, very much so.

Gustav Klimt died exactly 100 years ago, on February 6th, 1918.

And we feel we can honor him on this occasion with A HOUSE FOR GUSTAV KLIMT, since we believe architecture should not abstain from trying to connect with other cultural fields and with a celebration that is important.

So how would A HOUSE FOR GUSTAV KLIMT look like…?

It would, no doubt, reflect his work, since as Gauguin quite well said, “a man’s work is the explanation of that man.”

So let’s imagine a “KLIMT HOUSE.”

It would inevitably have gold in it… but maybe not that gold that F.L.Wright used, in his attempt to impress his prospective clients at his studio in Oak Park that he was “doing well.”

Reflecting on the usage of gold in Klimt’s work would be very important. There is an Oriental quality in Klimt’s work that shouldn’t be neglected. Combined with the eroticism that he was not uninterested in, this “Oriental” quality generates a poetic imagery that is specifically his.

The “ground” of many of his paintings is similar to a myriad of biological cells, approximating a background of great lyrical density and a discreet osmotic movement… against which, often, the “figure” emerges, unscathed.

Perhaps there are suggestions here, for the architect.

It is interesting, maybe, that Klimt was trained as an architectural painter…

But this is just an external detail, in a way…

All in all, A HOUSE FOR GUSTAV KLIMT should display that delicate balance between Structure and Ornament that his paintings display… and the ornament, often golden and spiral-like, we find it very relevant to our time…

Secession…? Yes, the very word is important for us too, today.

Design a Secessionist House: A HOUSE FOR GUSTAV KLIMT.

TODAY.
